428 Billion Euros In Turnover On The German Stock Exchanges In July - Equities Turnover For First Seven Months Nearly Double The Previous Year's Period - Xetra Sets Second Straight Record In Small And Mid-Cap Segments

Volume of 428 billion euros in equities, warrants and fixed-income securities was traded on the German stock exchanges in July, which is about the same volume as reported in July of last year. The total comprises about 328 billion euros in equities, warrants and exchange-traded funds and about 99 billion euros in fixed-income securities. Equities turnover in Frankfurt for the first sevem months of the year increased almost 100 percent compared with the same period of last year: whereas some 1.4 trillion euros in volume had been traded during the first seven months of 1999, the seven-month figure for the current year is already up to 2.7 billion euros. Trading at FWB, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, accounted for roughly 88 percent of the equities turnover in Germany.

The order-book statistics of Deutsche Börse, which are based on single counting of all transactions in the order book of Xetra® and the trading floor, show equities turnover of 96 billion euros for all German stock exchanges in July. Of this total, volume of 82 billion euros was traded in German equities, 66 billion euros (about 80 percent) through Xetra, and some 12 billion euros (or roughly 14 percent) in trading on the floor of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

Xetra set a new record in the small and mid-cap segments for the second month in a row. A new Xetra record was set in the MDAX with roughly 58 percent of the total turnover in these stocks. Xetra also set a new record with 26 percent of the total volume traded in the SDAX which comprises the largest stock in the small cap segment.

Deutsche Telecom AG was the most active DAX blue chip in July with a volume of about 10 billion euros traded in its shares. Nokia was the most heavily traded foreign stock with turnover of 2.8 billion euros. Kamps was the leading MDAX stock, with 242 million euros in shares traded, and Intershop was the top Neuer Markt stock, with share turnover of 623 million euros. In the SMAX segment, OAR Consulting AG ranked first with a volume of 54 million euros traded in its shares.
