The order-book statistics, which are based on single counting of all transactions in the order book of Xetra and in broker-supported trading on the floor, show that a total volume of 97.4 billion euros was traded in equities on the German stock exchanges in September, about 15 percent higher than the previous month's level (August: 84.4 billion euros). Of this total, 92 billion euros were traded in German equities, and some 5.4 billion euros in international equities. In the domestic equities, roughly 92 percent of the volume was posted through Xetra, and another 6 percent in trading on the floor of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FWB Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse). In international equities, about 86 percent of the total volume was traded on Xetra and on the Frankfurt trading floor.
A new record was set in Xetra trading of the SDAX (small-cap quality index) stocks in September: Roughly 45 percent of the total turnover in SDAX stocks was posted on Xetra, thus beating the previous record of some 37 percent (January 2001). In the trading of DAX blue chips, Xetra now has a 94 percent share of the market, about 75 percent in the MDAX stocks and about 65 percent of the volume in the Neuer Markt segment.
Allianz was the most active DAX blue chip in September, with volume of about 9.8 billion euros traded in its shares. Porsche was the leading MDAX (mid-cap DAX) stock, with 380 million euros in shares traded. Qiagen topped the list of Neuer Markt stocks, with turnover of 256.1 million euros in its shares. In the SMAX (small-cap quality) segment, Beru ranked first with volume of 14.7 million euros in shares traded. The highest-volume exchange-traded fund in September was the DAX EX with 1.2 billion euros in turnover.
