335 Billion Euros In Turnover On German Stock Exchanges In September - Double-Digit Growth In Trading Volumes - New Record In Number Of Transactions On Xetra

The aggregate turnover statistics show that a total volume of 335.1 billion euros was traded on the German stock exchanges in September 2003 - about 38 percent higher than the previous month's level (August 2003: 242 billion euros). The total comprises 270.3 billion euros in equities, warrants and exchange-traded funds as well as 64.8 billion euros in fixed-income securities. Turnover was 42 percent higher, year on year (September 2002: 236 billion euros).

According to the order-book statistics, which are based on single counting of all transactions in the order-book of Xetra and broker-supported trading on the floor, a total of 91.4 billion euros in volume was traded in equities on the German stock exchanges in September - about 27 percent higher than the previous month's level (August 2003: 72.1 billion euros). Of this total, 85.8 billion euros was traded in German equities and 5.6 billion euros in foreign equities. The turnover in equities grew 30 percent, year on year (September 2002: 70 billion euros).

Some 98 percent of the volume traded in German equities in September was posted on Xetra and on the floor of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FWB Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse). In the foreign equities, 83 percent of the volume was traded through Xetra and the Frankfurt trading floor. The number of transactions on Xetra set a new record in September with 6.8 million transactions (March 2003: 6.7 million transactions). This means that the number of transactions executed on Xetra in September was about 28 percent higher than the year before (September 2002: 5.3 million).

Siemens AG was the most liquid DAX® blue chip in September based on the Xetra Liquidity Measure (XLM), with 8 bp for an order size of 100,000 euros. In the MDAX®, Puma was highest with 43 bp. The most liquid equity-based exchange-traded fund was the DAX EX with 6 bp. XLM analyzes the liquidity in electronic securities trading, based on the implicit transaction costs for a roundtrip in the Xetra orderbook, and calculated in basis points (1 bp = 0.01 percent) for every security in continuous trading.

In September, Siemens was the highest-volume DAX blue chip on Xetra with 7.7 billion euros traded in its shares. Continental was the leading MDAX stock with 538 million euros in volume traded; Comdirect was the top SDAX® stock with 18 million euros in shares traded and Mobilcom the top TecDAX® stock with volume of 395 million euros traded in its shares. The highest-turnover exchange-traded fund was again the DAXEX with some 1.6 billion euros in volume traded.
