The order-book statistics, which are based on single counting of all transactions in the Xetra order book and broker-supported trading on the floor, show that some 82.9 billion euros in volume was traded in equities on the German stock exchanges in April, about 9 percent less than the previous month's figure (March 2002: 91.1 billion euros). Of this total, 75.4 billion euros was posted in German equities and some 7.5 billion euros in foreign equities. In the domestic shares, about 94 percent of the volume was traded through Xetra, another 5 percent in trading on the floor of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FWB Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse). In foreign shares, about 92 percent of the total volume was posted on Xetra and the Frankfurt trading floor.
In April, the Xetra share of trading in the DAX blue chips was about 96 percent. In the MDAX (mid-cap DAX) stocks, some 83 percent of the volume was traded on Xetra, some 46 percent of the SDAX (small-cap DAX) volume and about 71 percent of the volume in Neuer Markt stocks.
Siemens was the most active DAX blue chip in April with 8.8 billion euros traded in its shares. Kamps was the leading MDAX stock with 445.2 million euros in volume, and Thiel Logistik topped the list of Neuer Markt stocks with 459.4 million euros in shares traded. In the SMAX (small-cap quality) segment, Leoni ranked first with some 14.5 million euros in share turnover. The highest-volume exchange-traded fund in April was again the DAX EX with 1.1 billion euros in turnover. IBM was the leading stock in the Xetra US Stars segment, with volume of 77.7 million euros traded in its shares. Nokia ranked highest on the list of Xetra European Stars with 1.4 billion euros in share turnover.
