236 Billion Euros In Turnover On The German Stock Exchanges In September

Based on the aggregate turnover statistics, a total volume of 236.1 billion euros was traded on the German stock exchanges in September - about even with the previous month's level (August 2002: 241 billion euros). The September total comprises 177 billion euros in equities, warrants and exchange-traded funds as well as 59.1 billion euros in fixed-income securities. For the first three quarters of 2002 as a whole, a total of 2.7 trillion euros in volume was traded on the German stock exchanges (1st thru 3rd quarters 2001: 3.5 trillion euros). There were 5.3 million trades on Xetra in September (August 2002: 5.3 million trades). The Xetra share of trading in the DAX blue chips was about 97 percent. In the MDAX (mid-cap) stocks, some 89 percent of the volume was traded on Xetra, some 25 percent of the SDAX (small-cap) volume and about 75 percent of the volume in Neuer Markt stocks.

Deutsche Bank was the most active DAX blue chip on Xetra in September with 6.3 billion euros traded in its shares. Altana was the leading MDAX stock with 583 million euros in volume traded; this turnover was achieved during the time up to and including September 20 - as of September 23, Altana was included in the DAX blue-chip index. Mobilcom topped the list of Neuer Markt stocks with 114 million euros in shares traded. In the SMAX (small-cap quality) segment, Mediclin ranked first with some 2.4 million euros in share turnover. The highest-volume exchange-traded fund in September was again the DAX EX with about 888 million euros in turnover. Intel was the leading stock in the Xetra US Stars segment, with a volume of 14 million euros traded in its shares; Nokia ranked highest among the Xetra European Stars, with 830 million euros in volume traded.
