Volume in CFE's most-actively traded contract, VIX futures, based on the CBOE Volatility Index (ticker VX), totaled a record 1,088,090 contracts during 2008, up four percent from 1,046,475 contracts traded in 2007, the previous high.On the year, average daily volume in VIX futures was 4,301 contracts, versus 4,169 contracts per day in 2007.
Volume in futures on the CBOE DJIA Volatility Index, VXD (ticker DV), totaled 40,706 contracts traded during 2008, off seven percent from the year-ago total of 43,555 contracts.Trading activity in the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index futures, RVX (ticker VR), was 26,935 contracts, down ten percent from 30,011 contracts traded in 2007; while volume in futures on the CBOE NASDAQ-100 Volatility Index, VXN (ticker VN), totaled 2,243 contracts, a decline of 29 percent from the year ago volume of 3,164 contracts.
CFE's trading volume during December was 42,223 contracts, a decrease of 54 percent from December 2007 volume of 92,643 contracts traded.Average daily volume during the month was 1,919 contracts traded, compared to 4,632 contracts from the same time period last year.A total of 41,683 VIX futures contracts were traded during December, a decline of 51 percent from the 85,565 contracts last December.
