In 2004, Euronext remained the leading European exchange by value and number of transactions in shares traded on an electronic order book. 134.5 million share transactions have been completed over the year on Euronext’s cash markets, representing a turnover of €1,543 billion, up 13.5% on 2003.
The total number of trades in all cash products amounted to 141 million during 2004, representing an average daily number of 545,870.
11.8 million cash transactions were registered during December 2004, up 2.2% on the same period of 2003.
Euronext new listings raised more capital than those on any other stockmarket in Europe in 2004. The latest survey by independent consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers confirms that companies making their market debut on Euronext over the year raised €8.5 billion, or 31% of the European total over the period.
At the end of December 2004, the total market capitalisation of the 1,333 companies listed on Euronext markets was up 9.1% on last year, reaching €1,796 billion.
Derivatives products
Euronext.liffe, the international derivatives business of Euronext traded a record number of contracts for a single year. Over 790 million futures and options contracts in 2004, up 14% on 2003, making it the second largest exchange in the world.
Trading volumes have grown across all the product sectors. Individual equity products showed the strongest growth, trading 316 million contracts and up 26% for the same period in 2003. Interest rate products traded 313 million futures and options contracts during the year, up 14% on 2003.
Commodity products traded over 8 million contracts in 2004, up 21% on volumes in 2003.
Euronext.liffe’s Three Month Eurodollar future, launched on 18 March 2004, had already traded 4.7 million contracts by the end of the year.
During December 2004 Euronext.liffe traded 47 million contracts, up 4% on December 2003. Average daily volume was over 2 million contracts. Interest rate products traded over 19 million contracts in December, up 20% on December 2003. Commodities traded 672,000 contracts, up 9% on December 2003.
