The domestic market capitalisation of the Australian Stock Exchange at the end of 1999 was AUD652 billion a 21.6 per cent increase compared to the end 1998 figure of AUD536 billion. Domestic market capitalisation as a percentage of GDP was 95.0% at the end of 1999 compared to the end 1998 figure of 83.7%. There was no change in market liquidity which was 53.0% in 1999 and 1998. There were 10.2 million equity transactions in 1999 compared to 6.7 million in 1998. Turnover volume in 1999 was 114.0 billion an increase of 50.9 per cent when compared to the 1998 figure of 75.5 billion. Turnover value in 1999 was AUD306.9 billion; the 1998 figure was AUD256.5 billion. The average daily value was AUD1.21 billion in 1999 and AUD1.01 billion in 1998. There were 10.1 million options contracts traded in 1999; in 1998 8.07 million contracts were traded. Corresponding premium value was AUD8.3 million in 1999 and AUD4.6 million in 1998. In warrants there were 313 million transactions in 1999, a decrease of 11 per cent compared to the 1998 total of 351 million transactions. Corresponding premium values were AUD3.0 billion in 1999 and AUD3.3 billion in 1998. The All Ordinaries Index ended the year at 3152.5. The end 1998 closing value was 2813.4
