LIFFE Trades £14 Trillion Worth Of Contracts For First Quarter 2000

The London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) traded an average daily nominal value of £223 billion (357 billion) in March 2000 and traded £14 trillion for the first quarter, maintaining its position as the largest exchange in Europe by value.

LIFFE traded 11,701,629 futures and options contracts during March 2000 representing an average daily volume of 508,766 contracts, up 3% on February and 19% on January 2000.

LIFFE's Chief Executive, Hugh Freedberg said, "LIFFE's flagship Euribor contract continues to grow and is up 45% year-on-year. Trading in equity products has increased, with the FTSE 100 index futures volume up 22% year-on-year and equity options up 23% year on year."

The Following daily and monthly records were set in March: FTSE 100 Index Future set a new daily record of 106,133 contracts on 16 March (previous daily record of 105,666 set on 13 March 2000). FTSE Eurotop 100 Index Future set a new daily record of 7,434 contracts on 13 March (previous daily record of 3,429 set on 2 July 1999).

MSCI Pan-Euro Index Future set a new daily record of 4,695 contracts on 3 March (previous daily record of 2,300 set on 1 June 1999). Euribor Future set a new monthly record trading 5,216,618 contracts in March (previous monthly record of 4,692,471 was set in February 2000.
