Nomura Holding America Inc., today appointed Mark J. Schuermann as Executive Director, Public Affairs, in the company’s Washington, D.C. office.
Mark reports to Heather Wingate, Managing Director, Public Affairs, in Washington, D.C. and will represent the company before the executive and legislative branches, as well as regulatory bodies in the US.
“Mark’s combination of financial services policy, private sector and Capitol Hill experience, makes him an ideal addition to our Washington office.” said Ms. Wingate. “The goal was to recruit a best-in-class partner to establish our Washington office, and Mark fits that description perfectly."
Mark joins Nomura from the Financial Services Forum, a financial and economic policy organization representing 19 CEOs of global financial companies with operations in the U.S. Prior to joining the Forum, Mark was a Senior Director at Sallie Mae, the nation’s largest education finance company, and before that he was a Managing Director at Public Strategies, where he worked with corporations, trade associations and non-profits on public policy issues.
Mark worked on Capitol Hill for 16 years, serving as Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative Harold Ford, Jr. (D-TN) and Communications Director in the whip office of Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), who is now the Senate Majority Leader. Mark has extensive experience working on a broad range of issues that impact the financial services industry, economic policy, the federal budget and education.
Schuermann received his Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and Political Science from the University of Memphis, where he serves on the university alumni association’s National Advisory Board.
