FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index:

Exchanges’ Merger Activity Tracked In FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index - Exchanges Sector Catches Fire Again In 2011 - Index Remains Stable In January

Date 13/02/2011

Against a backdrop of significant merger activity announced in the exchanges sector, the lead barometer of the sector’s health and performance, the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index, remained stable in January 2011.

While consolidation of the exchanges industry may draw closer ties between America and Europe it was Spain, Greece and New Zealand exchanges which experienced the largest increases in share prices during January.

Commenting on the Index which closed at 25,247.38 on the 31 January 2011, says Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index said:

“The exchanges sector marked time in January, but this was the calm before the storm. The action started last quarter in Asia with the merger news of ASX and SGX. This was followed, in January, by the two large Russian exchanges, RTS and MICEX and Latin America’s first international merger of bourses, between Columbia and Peru.

Now Europe and North America have become a whirlwind of action as the sector has caught fire. Next month’s Index report will surely mark the beginning of a new bull run in the sector. How long will it last? Watch this space."

The Index*, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of the exchanges’ performance, saw a 0.1 per cent decrease in January 2011.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars was Spain’s Bolsas y Mercados Espanoles with an 18.2 per cent increase in share price from 31 December 2010 to 31 January 2011.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was Brazil’s BM&F Bovespa with a 12 per cent decrease in share price from 31 December 2010 to 31 January 2011.
