Stock Exchange Of Hong Kong Monthly Market Statistics - July

Contrary to the relatively low level of turnover in the past 3 months, market turnover increased in July.

The average daily turnover for the 21 trading days in July was HK$13,659 million, an increase of 32 per cent compared with the previous month and 56 per cent as compared with the HK$8,770 million in July 1999. Total turnover value for the month was HK$286,841 million, compared with HK$216,898 million in the previous month and HK$184,176 million in July 1999. Of this total, HK$23.31 million was contributed by trading in Nasdaq stocks.

A total of 143,468 million shares changed hands in July, compared with 160,023 million shares in the previous month and 132,468 million shares in July 1999. Of this total, 38,960 shares were contributed by trading in Nasdaq stocks. The average daily turnover by volume was 6,832 million shares, down 10 per cent from the previous month but an increase of 8 per cent when compared with 6,308 million shares in July 1999.

The total number of trades during the month was 2,904,117 which was 18 per cent more than in June. Of this total, the number of trades in Nasdaq stocks was 554.

Average daily turnover for the first seven months of the year was HK$14,290 million, compared with HK$6,699 million in the same period last year. Total turnover by value was HK$2,043,484 million during the first seven months of the year, compared with HK$951,249 million for the same period last year.

During the first seven months of this year, the average daily turnover by volume was 11,455 million shares, compared with 4,484 million shares during the corresponding period of 1999. A total of 1,638,042 million shares were traded during the first seven months of this year, compared with 636,689 million shares during the same period in 1999.

In July, the market continued its upward trend from June, although experiencing some downside pressure towards the end of the month.

The All Ordinaries Index at the end of July was 6971.42, an increase of 4 per cent from the previous month and 25 per cent from July 1999. Its highest closing for July was 7372.27 on the 21st and its lowest was 6669.63 on the 3rd.

The Hang Seng Index at the end of July was 16840.98, an increase of 4 per cent from the previous month and 28 per cent from July 1999. Its highest closing for July was 17920.86 on the 21st and its lowest was 16124.97 on the 3rd.

As at 31 July 2000, the total number of Trading Right Holders were 571 (holding 929 trading rights), of which 517 were Exchange Participants (holding 872 trading rights) and 54 were non-Exchange participants (holding 57 trading rights). An Exchange Participant is an individual or corporation who may trade on or through the Exchange and who is a registered securities dealer with the Securities and Futures Commission.

The market capitalisation at the end of July 2000 was HK$5,033,689 million compared with HK$3,529,668 million on the same date last year, an increase of HK$1,504,021 million or 43 per cent.

The total number of listed companies was 718 on 31 July 2000 against 688 on 31 July 1999. The total number of Nasdaq stocks (trading status only) was 7 on 31 July 2000.

During the month of July, 3 new companies were listed: Millennium Sense Holdings Ltd, Shanxi Central Pharmaceutical International Ltd and Earnest Investments Holdings Ltd; and two deletions occurred: JF Indonesia Fund Inc. and Wah Kwong Shipping Holdings Ltd.
