SFE Sets Highest Trading Volume For The Year

Date 16/03/2000

The Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE) experienced its busiest trading day of the year yesterday, Wednesday, 15 March, with 338,421 futures and options contracts being exchanged.

The 2000 turnover record represented a nominal value of A$81.37 billion and surpassed the year's previous high of 256,357 contracts set on 2 February. Yesterday's figure was also the highest daily volume since the introduction of SYCOM® IV, SFE's electronic trading system, on 23 July 1999. SYCOM® IV became SFE's sole trading platform when the Exchange moved to full electronic trading on 15 November last year.

The high turnover coincided with the rollover of SFE's 3-Year and 10-Year Treasury Bond futures from March 2000 contracts into June 2000 contracts. 180,866 3-Year bond futures contracts, SFE's most heavily traded product, and 78,467 10-Year bond futures contracts were traded.

Trading volume at SFE has been significantly higher in 2000 compared with 12 months earlier. Year to date turnover exceeds six million futures and options contracts, more than 20% above the 1999 level.
