Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes July 2011 Performance Report

The global Dow Jones Islamic Market Titans 100 Index, which measures the performance of 100 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks globally, dropped 0.95% in July, closing at 2327.64. In comparison, the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 Index, which measures the 50 biggest companies worldwide, posted a loss of 0.28%, closing at 183.09.

− The Dow Jones Islamic Market Asia/Pacific Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in the Asia/Pacific region, increased 1.16%, closing at 2194.65. The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 Index, in comparison, posted a gain of 0.16%, closing at 138.28.

− Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones Islamic Market Europe Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of the 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in Europe, closed at 2288.46, a loss of 1.72%, while the conventional Dow Jones Europe Index loss 3.57%, closing at 278.79.

− Measuring the performance of 50 of the largest Shari’ah compliant U.S. stocks, the Dow Jones Islamic Market U.S. Titans 50 Index decreased, closing at 2350.81. It represents a loss of 1.04%. The U.S. blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased 2.18%, closing at 12143.24.

Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes versus Conventional Dow Jones Indexes

In July, the Dow Jones DFM Titans 10 Index, measuring the 10 largest and most liquid stocks listed on the Dubai Financial Market, had a down month with a loss of 1.07%, closing at 2029.77.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Kuwait Index posted a loss of 3.52%, closing at 869.22. Its conventional counterpart index, the Dow Jones Kuwait Composite Index, was down, closing at 212.37. It represents a loss of 3.72%.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Turkey Index closed at 3447.12, a loss of 5.35% in July, while the Dow Jones Turkey Total Stock Market Index closed at 1243.07, a loss of 4.87%.

Measuring the performance of Shari’ah compliant stocks of five of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, the Dow Jones Islamic Market GCC Index closed at 1219.01, a loss of 2.88%. The conventional Dow Jones GCC Index was down 2.19%, closing at 1405.90.

 

Other Markets and Asset Classes 

In July, the Dow Jones Islamic Market BRIC Equal Weighted Index decreased 0.82%. It had a closing value of 2173.21. By comparison, the Dow Jones BRIC 50 Index closed at 628.64, with a loss of 2.09%.

The Dow Jones Citigroup Sukuk Index, which measures the performance of global bonds complying with Islamic investment guidelines, increased 1.18%, closing at 131.62.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Sustainability Index, which measures sustainable practice business of companies respecting the Shari’ah laws, decreased 0.80%, closing at 2567.56. The conventional Dow Jones Sustainability Index loss 2.63% with a closing value of 1073.81.

 

Global July 2011 Industries Winners and Losers

The three best performing Dow Jones Islamic Market Industry Indexes were the Dow Jones Islamic Market Telecommunications index, Dow Jones Islamic Market Utilities index and Dow Jones Islamic Market Basic Materials index with performances of 2.05%, 0.02% and a down performance of 0.10%, respectively. The Dow Jones Islamic Market Industrial, Dow Jones Islamic Market Technology and Dow Jones Islamic Market Health Care indexes were the three worst performing industry indexes with down performances of 4.56%, 1.55% and 1.28%, respectively.
