Central European Stock Exchanges Meeting in Ljubljana

Date 12/04/2001

On 10 - 11 April 2001, Ljubljana Stock Exchange hosted a meeting of the five Central European Stock Exchanges from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia; the shares of companies from these countries are included in the Central European Index - CESI. Regular revision of the Index was one of the main issues on the agenda of the meeting, next to discussions about the activities of the association and possibilities for potential new membership. The representatives also considered the revisions of criteria for shares to join CESI Index, and presented some further initiatives for cooperation with the East-West Institute.

Ljubljana Stock Exchange has been part of the CESI group since 31 October 1996, when it joined the Index calculation together with the Bratislava Stock Exchange. It is therefore already CESI's fifth anniversary - Budapest Stock Exchange first published its value on February 1, 1996.

CESI Index reflects the price movements of most liquid shares listed on the official stock exchange markets of the five exchanges. These securities boast high market capitalisation, and can be invested in also by foreign investors.

Index revision is completed by the Budapest Stock Exchange twice a year (March 31 and October 31), based on the recommendation of the Revision Committee which includes two representatives of each CESI Stock Exchange. Following the latest revision, on March 31, 2001, the Index now consists of 42 securities with total market capitalisation of 29,7 billion USD.

Securities from the Ljubljana Stock Exchange official market that are included in the CESI are the following: Krka, Lek, Mercator, Petrol, Sava, Pivovarna Laško, Gorenje, SKB banka, Luka Koper and Intereuropa. Daily Index values are published by Reuters at 16:00 CET.

At the meeting, Ljubljana Stock Exchange also took the initiative for the CESI group to be more formalized, with regard to the increased interest for co-operation also among other non-CESI Stock Exchanges.
